PERSONA AND USER RESEARCH

Who are the different stakeholders and what are their roles concerning downtime and reliability?

How do they handle production issues and how can our product better address specific needs? We researched different engineering teams and broke them into 4 different personas. We asked what problem are we solving with each new feature and how would we market to each specific persona?

  • Arthur – CEO
  • Dan – VP of Engineering
  • Hector – Team Lead
  • James – Engineer
USER FLOW

Planning the user flow as a team. What pages will be needed for the app?

We designed the app from the ground up. As a part of a small team, I was able to work directly with talented DevOps engineers and our Chief Technology Officer to establish the flow to build our monitoring solution.

Sprint Planning

Estimating time for the project.

Each week we would plan different parts of the app as a team to keep the project on track. Working with the dev team I was able to see planning from a new perspective and learn how to design for the strengths of our developers by working together from the start.

WHITEBOARD

Whiteboard each section of the app for the right product-market fit.

Having a dedicated DevOps engineer to work with on the planning of each section helped with the focus of the app. We didn’t just design the app to look good we made it help our users by showing them problems before they happened.

WIREFRAMES

Low-fidelity set up.

After whiteboarding, I worked on low-fidelity designs with engineering to get a representation of the actual content.

PRODUCT SCREENS

High-fidelity product screens.

Here are a few of the product pages for Blue Matador’s monitoring solution from 2017.

MARKETING WEBSITE

Planned, designed and built the marketing site to help launch our product.

Along with the application I worked with the marketing and content team to design and build out the site in HubSpot. I designed the site to match the brand image we were building in the app. I quickly learned how to take advantage of Hubspot’s features and flaws to make a marketing site to help bring in leads.

High-fidelity Website.

Worked with the content team to plan, design, and build out the marketing site in Hubspot.

PRICING PAGE

Marketing site and in-app pricing pages.

We put together different pricing pages on the marketing site and in-app to push customers into trials and show different tiers based on each user’s infrastructure and usage.

EVENT BRANDING

Event Branding: AWS re:invent, DevOps Days, SaltConf, and other tradeshows.

Working at a growing start-up I’m responsible for the overall brand, not just the app. Have you ever sourced, rented, set up, and controlled a mechanical bull? I have. We had a fun time with our brand and love having our customers engaged and even provided bull rides during a tradeshow.
